A Guide to New Hampshire Summer Getaways: 5 Most Popular Destinations
With summer right around the corner, we, in New Hampshire, are gearing up for loads of fun in the sun in our beloved Granite State. Yes, we’re probably biased, but where else can you get everything in a vacation you want, including stunning lakes, awe-inspiring mountains, quaint coastal towns, thrilling adventures, and some well-deserved peace and quiet?
We truly believe that New Hampshire has something for everyone, but first, visit us and be the judge of that. To give you a gentle nudge, here are five of the most popular destinations.
1. Lake Winnipesaukee
Lake Winnipesaukee is New Hampshire’s top destination, so be prepared for the crowds you’ll meet. The crystal-clear waters will become the playground of watersport lovers, as they tube, waterski, wakeboard, boat, kayak, and canoe around the lake and explore all the islands and hidden coves it has to offer.
If you want something milder, you can head to the picturesque Weirs Beach for some quality food, laze by the beach, stroll the boardwalk, enjoy the arcade entertaining your kids, or being one!
If you’re feeling a little more energetic, you can also hike up Mount Major, which is an approximately 4.7-mile moderate hike with stunning views.
2. White Mountains
You cannot speak about New Hampshire without thinking about the spectacular White Mountains. With countless trails crisscrossing a whopping 800,000 acres of Mother Nature’s gift like gorgeous forests, imposing peaks, and stunning waterfalls.
Whether you want a short 2-3 hour hike to gently cascading waterfalls to cool off in, or an 8-hour slog out the magnificent Mount Washington, the White Mountains are known to have astounding views that cannot be described in words or even pictures, only experienced.
3. Squam Lake
If Lake Winnipesaukee is a tad too crowded for you, head northwest to Squam Lake, which is another of New Hampshire’s gems. Less developed than its big sister and prized for its abundant wildlife and gorgeous natural beauty, it might suit you more if you’re looking for a quieter place to enjoy some water time.
Like Lake Winni, you can kayak, SUP, canoe, boat, and go for hikes along the numerous trails in the region. Photographers can also try spotting rare wildlife such as otters, bald eagles, loons, and owls.
4. Visit Portsmouth
New Hampshire isn’t all about outdoor adventure. Charming, quaint towns dot the coastline and Portsmouth is one of the oldest. Settled in 1623, the town is home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the oldest continuously operating US Navy shipyard.
Go for a gentle stroll and soak up the rich, vibrant waterfront, scenic harbor, and spirited arts and food scene. Visit Market Square and explore quirky shops, Instagram-worthy architecture, and delectable seafood restaurants.
You can also visit the Strawberry Banke Museum which showcases the neighborhood’s evolution throughout more than 350 years.
5. Kancamagus Highway
This isn’t quite a destination but rather, a route, and a jaw-droppingly stunning one at that. This 34.5-mile scenic route goes through White Mountain National Forests and passes several viewpoints, waterfalls, and scenic areas, each one breathtaking in its own way.
If you could use an easy day without spending too much energy, jump in your car and go on a little road trip!
Final Thoughts
There’s plenty to do in New Hampshire and we hope this list gets you started. Keep in mind these are popular destinations and everyone is out and about in summer, so you’ll have to contend with some crowds.
